St. Vincent and the Grenadines is a country. It is also a beautiful archipelago of islands in the south Eastern Caribbean, about 90 miles west of Barbados. For nautical chart readers, Union Island is located at 12ª 35' N and 61º 25' W.
The Grenadines are made up of some 32 islands and cays stretching south from St. Vincent, the "mainland". A few of the islands are inhabited, but many are simply bird sanctuaries and environmental sites. Union Island is the southernmost island of the Grenadines.
You can fly into Union Island from the island of St. Vincent itself, or from Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia, or Trinidad. From these locations there are many daily flights. Union Island is at a strategic position; it is halfway between the island of St. Vincent and Grenada. It is an important stop for yachts people looking for provisions. It also has a variety of services and products to offer visitors. Its proximity to the Tobago Cays and Palm Island make it a popular destination.
There is a ferry called M/V Barracouda which plies the waters of the Grenadines. This form of transportation gives you a feel for the people and the islands. It makes several stops between St. Vincent and Union Island three times per week - Monday, Thursday and Saturday, except holidays when the schedule changes.
M/V Gemstar travels the same route on Tuesdays and Fridays.
